International Yoga Day commonly known as Yoga Day is celebrated annually on 21st June since its beginning in 2015. The idea of international Yoga day was first proposed by the prime minister of our country and then endorsed by the record 175 members of the United Nations. The proposal was made during the opening of the 69th session of UN general assembly and in the assembly, our prime minister said:

“Yoga is an invaluable gift from our ancient tradition. It embodies the unity of mind & body, thought, and action, a holistic approach that is valuable to our health & well-being. It is not only exercise but also the way to discover the senses of oneness with yourself, the world and nature.

The prime minister of India also suggested the date for the international yoga day to be 21st June as this day has a special significance in the calendar. This is the longest day in the northern hemisphere and it is the day when the rays of the sun directly hit one of the two tropical latitudes lines.

As stated above, the theme of 2019 international yoga day is climate change. It will be celebrated at the united nation on Thursday 20th July 2019 followed by a panel discussion on 21st June. In India, this event is going to be celebrated at Prabhat Tara ground in Jharkhand's Ranchi. The honorable prime minister will lead the event along with 30,000 volunteers.

The theme of 2018 international day was “Yoga for Peace”. This event was held in the Dehradun at the forest research institute. The event was led by the Indian prime minister with more than 50,000 volunteers.

The theme of 2017 international day was “Connect the Youth”. This event was held in the Lucknow. The Indian Prime Minister along with 51000 individuals participated in this event.

The theme of 2016 international day was “Yoga for Body & Beyond”. The ministry of Ayush made the necessary arrangements and more than 35000 individuals came to India all across the world to participate in this event. The event was celebrated at Rajpath in New Delhi. All the participants performed 21 asanas in 35 minutes.
