World Environment Day was established
by the UN general assembly in 1972 on the first day of the Stockholm conference
on the human environment. The reason behind reserving a day for environment
protection was to integrate the human actions with the environment. Two years
later in 1974, on 5th June, the celebration of first-world
environment day took place and the theme was “only one earth”. In 1987, a decision took place among the
member countries to change the host countries every year.

environmental concern. The 2020 World Environment Day theme is “Celebrating
Biodiversity”.

Who will host the World Environment Day 2020 Theme?
In 1987, the member countries of the
United Nation decided to change the host countries every year and since then, a
different country is hosting the event. This year, Colombia in partnership with
Germany will host the theme of World Environment Day 2020. If you can recall
the theme of 2019 World Earth Day, then it was “protect the species”. Due to the irresponsible behaviours of human
beings, the extinction of close to one million species has taken place so it would
be the right time to focus on biodiversity.

Columbia has been chosen to host
the global event theme of WED 2020 and it is one of the megadiverse countries
hold 10% of planet biodiversity. If we talk about bird or orchid species, it
ranks first & species like a plant, butterflies, freshwater fish, & amphibians,
it ranks second.
