You can contribute either solo or become a part of the group celebrating this event. You are free to choose and contribute in any manner.

World Environment Day has become a global platform to reach millions of peoples across the globe with participation from more than 143 countries globally. Major corporations, NGOs, government, celebrities, etc. participate and advocate environmental causes.

What is World Environment Day & when it is celebrated?

World Environment Day is the global event conducted by the united nation worldwide to spread awareness among people to understand the importance of Mother Earth. The major objective of WED is to protect our nature and look at various environmental issues growing day by day. Air pollution, water pollution, soil pollution, climate change, global warming, ozone depletion, noise pollution, marine pollution, overpopulation, etc. are the major’s environmental problems.

What is the history of World Environment Day?

World Environment Day was established by the UN general assembly in 1972 on the first day of the Stockholm conference on the human environment. The reason behind reserving a day for environment protection was to integrate the human actions with the environment. Two years later in 1974, on 5th June, the celebration of first-world environment day took place and the theme was “only one earth”.  In 1987, a decision took place among the member countries to change the host countries every year.

What is the theme of World Environment Day 2020?

Who will host the World Environment Day 2020 Theme?

In 1987, the member countries of the United Nation decided to change the host countries every year and since then, a different country is hosting the event. This year, Colombia in partnership with Germany will host the theme of World Environment Day 2020. If you can recall the theme of 2019 World Earth Day, then it was “protect the species”.  Due to irresponsible behaviors of human beings, extinction of close to one million species has taken place so it would be the right time to focus on biodiversity.

Columbia has been chosen to host the global event theme of WED 2020 and it is one of the megadiverse countries hold 10% of planet biodiversity. If we talk about bird or orchid species, it ranks first & species like a plant, butterflies, freshwater fish, & amphibians, it ranks second.

What is Biodiversity & why it is important?

Biodiversity refers to the variety & variability of life on Earth. It is the variation of earth’s terrestrial, freshwater & marine species and as well as their habitats.

Broadly speaking, it is the collection of species such as humans, animals, plants, trees, birds, water, and anything you can see on earth. Biodiversity is very important to maintain sustainable life & ecological balance on the earth. It provides food, water, and other necessary resources for the survival of species.
