World Food Day (WFD) is a global event celebrated every year across the world on 16th October. The main purpose of this day is to honor the founding date of the Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO) concerned about food security. The FAO was established by the UN in the year 1945. World Food Day is celebrated with great energy & enthusiasm by several other organizations expects FAO and here is the list of organizations celebrating this day as a grand festival.

HISTORY OF WORLD FOOD DAY

Food is the basic necessity of the world and with the objective to make the world hunger-free, the member countries of the Food and Agriculture Organization in 1979 decided to establish the World Food Day. Dr. Pal Romany, the Hungarian delegate proposed the idea of launching World Food Day worldwide at the 20th General Conference of the FAO. Since then, WFD is been observed worldwide in more than 150 countries and the main purpose of this day is to raise consciousness and awareness about the problems & reasons behind hunger & poverty.

THEME OF 2019 WORLD FOOD DAY

The theme of World Food Day 2019 is “Our Actions Are Our Future-Healthy Diets for a Zero Hunger Day.”

The objective of achieving zero hunger does not mean to address hunger only but also concern about nourishing people while nurturing the planet. The major objectives of the 2019 world food day are as follow:

1. Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO) also, request to all the individuals to think about “what are they eating”?

2. FAO urges all the stakeholders to make a healthy & sustainable diet affordable & accessible for everyone.

3. FAO emphasis healthy food and they said, we have changed our diets habits due to globalization, urbanization & income growth. We have become dependent on supermarkets, fast food outlets, street food, & take away restaurants.

 
WHAT IS UNHEALTHY DIET & WHO IS RESPONSIBLE 

A diet is called unhealthy if is high in refined starches, sugar, fats, salts, processed foods, meats, and other animal source products. The major reasons behind this unhealthy diet are as follows.

1. Less time spent at home in preparing meals as in most of the families, both husband-wife works.
2. Highly dependent on supermarkets, take away restaurants, fast food outlets, street vendor foods, etc.

4. The unhealthy diet causes obesity which affects approximately one in three people.

5. The unhealthy diet is one of the leading risk factors of death due to non-communicable diseases like cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and other factors.

6. Unhealthy eating habits also take a heavy toll on national health budgets.

 
WHAT IS A HEALTHY DIET AND WHY IT IS IMPORTANT?

A diet can be a healthy diet if it meets the nutritional needs of individuals by providing required nutritious and lead an active life. A healthy diet also reduces the risk of disease. It contains fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, and whole grains, and foods that are low in fats (especially saturated fats), sugar and salt.

WHAT ARE THE REASONS BEHIND HUNGER AND POVERTY?

The major reasons behind the hunger are poverty, food shortages, war & conflict, climate change, unstable markets, poor infrastructure, poor nutrition, poor public policy, economy, food shortage waste, job instability, poverty, gender inequality, forced migration, discrimination, nutritional quality

THEMES OF PREVIOUS YEAR WORLD FOOD DAY

The first World Food Day was celebrated in the year 1981 and the theme of that year was “Food Comes First”. Since then, every year a theme was adopted by the FAO to highlight the common areas of concerns that required attention and action from all the stakeholders.  Most of the themes were related to farming & agriculture and the main purpose is to address the concern related to food, hunger, farming, agriculture, deficiency of foods, etc.

WHAT CAN WE DO ON WORLD FOOD DAY 2019 THEME

I don’t know much about the activities that we can perform to support the 2019 world food day theme but here in this post, I am writing some basic actions every individual must perform.

1. Don’t waste food and put only that much food on your plate which you can eat.

2. If you have extra food, then instead of throwing food, give it to needy persons.
