Here, in this post, let us know about the history of Kumbh Mela, what is the significance of Kumbh Mela, what are the places where it is conducted and many more things related to Kumbh Mela, so let us start.

History of Kumbh Mela

Why Kumbh Mela is Celebrated in India

According to the mythologies of Hindu, the origin of this grand festival starts from the curse of Durvasa Muni. One day, Durvasa Rishi gifted the beautiful artistic flowers to Indra Dev, which Maneka gave to him. Indra put the garland in the neck of his elephant & thereafter Aaravat threw the garland on the ground and seeing that Durvasa muni became very angry. Durvasa Rishi said to Indra that the continuous appreciation by Gautama and Vasishta Rishi has brought ego within Indra. To calm the arrogance of Indra, Durvasa Muni had given the curse to all the Devta and due to this curse, Devta lost their strength.

Once the Devta started losing their strength, they went to Lord Shiva & Lord Brahma in order to regain their strength.  Both Lord Shiva & Brahma gave advice to Devta to visit Lord Vishnu and pray to him to get the power again.  Lord Vishnu had shown the path to Devta to get power back. He advised churning the ocean of Milk which was known as Ksheera Sagar in order to get Amrit. Since the devtas had not enough power to churn the ocean alone so they went to the demons for their help.  The demons agreed to help them but there was one condition to share half of the nectar of Amrit with them. The demigods or Devta agreed and Samudra Manthan started. The Meru Mountain played the role of churning rod to churn Ksheera Sagar. The king of serpents “Vasuki” played the part of the rope around the mountain.

History of Kumbh Mela

There 14 items came out from this Samudra Manthan and those 14 items were Poison, Parijat Kalpavruksha (A wish-fulfilling tree), Som (Moon), Haridhanu (A Divine bow), Kamdhenu (also known as wish-fulfilling Cow), Sura (Alcohol), A Conch, Dhanwantari, Koustubha mani (A diamond), Uchchaihshravas (A kind of White Horse), Airavat (An elephant having four tusks), Shri Lakshmi Devi (Consort of Shrivishṇu), Devanganas such as Rambha etc.

When the Amrit Kalash came out, the Demigods started fearing for the fact that if these demons took this Amrit, they became immortal and it was not possible to defeat them in the fight. Therefore, God gave the signal to the Son of Indra to take this holy Pot from Dhanwantari and ran away. Demons started running behind Indra’s son and they started fighting for Amrit Kalash. They fought for 12 days and during this battle, the few drops of that Amrit fell down at four places of the earth. In these four places, this Kumbh Mela is celebrated. It is a story related to the history of Kumbh Mela.
